Scope. Culture, Society and Masculinities (CS&M) brings together synoptic as well as “micrographic” ideas and views on men/boys, masculinity and genders. It provides a forum for emergent explorations of masculinity/ies, specifically those that situate local (micro-ethnographic) findings and theories in broader historical, political, and/or sociological frameworks.

Important themes, for instance, include the overarching relevance of South/North, East/West and local/global relations, as well as the Anglo-American hegemony in theory building around themes of masculinity/gender. We are especially inviting comparative views and works that rethink, elaborate, or critique existing ideas and concepts of locality, globalization and regionalization in gender studies, both as a subject area and as a field of academic and political performance.

Articles are of interest to a diverse and worldwide audience of scholars and researchers, social workers, cultural brokers, program and curriculum designers, and policy-makers. Priority is given to reviews and critical discussions in theory development, policy trends and/or area studies. Pertinent fields of research include but are not limited to

ethnic, cross-cultural and trans-cultural studies;
globalization studies, migration studies, and tourism studies;
cultural, social, historical, comparative and philosophical anthropology;
cultural psychology;
culture and health studies;
postcolonial studies;
international relations and conflict studies;
gender policy studies;
social/human geography;
international media studies; and
(art) historical studies.

CS&M is peer reviewed and published semi-annually, in print and digital format (digital only as of 2013), by the Men’s Studies Press. The primary language is English.

Submission. Submit manuscripts only as electronic files (.rtf or .doc file) via the general editor, diederikjanssen@gmail.com.

Manuscript preparation. Culture, Society & Masculinities publishes regular articles (up to about 8,000 words), brief reports (2,500 to 3,000 words), and reviews of books and media. Authors should prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed., 2009). Please visit our Style Checklist page for details. Formatting instructions and instructions on the preparation of abstracts, text with designated headers (A-level through C-level), references, tables, and figures appear in the Manual. Abstract and keywords. All manuscripts must include an abstract containing a maximum of 120 words typed on a separate page. After the abstract supply up to five keywords or brief phrases.

References. References should be listed in alphabetic order (also double-spaced). Each listed reference should be cited in the text and each text citation should be listed in the References. No spaces between authors’ initials.

Figures. High-quality printouts are needed for all figures (300 dpi). The minimum line weight for line art is 0.5 point for optimal printing. Provide pictures numbered, and accompanied with full copyright notices.

Language and translation. Men’s Studies Press is committed to publishing papers in English by authors from around the world. In order to ensure minimal costs at the stage of final editing of manuscripts, but to encourage the widest possible representation of authors from different cultures whose mother tongue is not English, experience has led the Press to establish the following policy: If the principal author’s first language is not English and the manuscript is below the standards of scholarly communication, the author must have the manuscript translated before it is submitted, even if the author has written a draft of the text in English. The translator’s CV must be included with the manuscript when it is submitted and the translator will be named in the Acknowledgments note. While many authors are multilingual as readers and speakers, the matter of ease of communication to our readership of the author’s ideas as writers has prompted this policy. Editors of the journals will work closely with authors to implement this policy of the Press. Each editor is authorized by the Press to work out the details of special cases where the cost or availability of a translator poses a problem to the author.

Review procedure. CS&M uses a masked, double review process. Authors are asked to include all identifying information in the cover letter, including the manuscript title, the authors’ names, institutional affiliations, and e-mail addresses. The first page of the manuscript should include only the article’s title, abstract, and keywords. Footnotes containing information that would reveal the authors’ identity and/or affiliation should be removed. Every effort should be made to see that the manuscript itself contains no clues to the author’s identity.

Permissions. When an article has been accepted, authors are required to obtain and provide to the editor all necessary permissions to reproduce in print and electronic form any copyrighted work, including, for example, photographs of people.

Publication Policy. Our policy prohibits an author from submitting the same manuscript for concurrent consideration by two or more publications. Our policy also prohibits publication of a manuscript that has already been published in whole or substantial part elsewhere. Authors of manuscripts describing research using human participants are required to comply with APA ethical standards in the treatment of human participants. Upon acceptance of a manuscript authors must sign and return a copyright agreement.
